ACTIVITIES

CHILDRENS RESPITE CENTER

Parents who have children with facing with disabilities or and mental illness bring their kids to the center. Our staff teach them to sing, dance, draw, tell stories, do recreational arts. These activities are of great service to the children and the community, while giving respect to those children who are sometimes mistreated because they are considered outcasts.

RESEARCH AND DOCUMENTATION CENTER
Locals may come to the center to read and borrow books which we download from the internet. The books are mainly on culture and arts, mental health and arts mobility. We intend to be the best reference center on arts and mental health in Kenya with state-of the art equipment and information.

RESIDENCE FOR THE ARTISTS
Artists from all over the world are invited to take up residency for 2-3 months to work on his or her passion in the area of any discipline, e.g.: music, dance, performance art, folklore, new media arts. At the end of the stay the artist is expected to showcase his or her works to the community. We provide food and accommodations to artists who stay with us. Our friendly staffs encourage artists who wish to practice their skills in Kenya to use our facilities.

Know Us

The Lake Victoria Special Arts Initiative was formed by a dedicated groups of residents, artists, techers, health workers and villagers who reside in the Kibera slums Nairobi, one of the biggest housing slums in the sub-Saharan Africa. Most of the Volunteers are from the Lake Victoria region, hence the name Lake Victoria Arts.

The project was established in 2006 to address the social, health, cultural and developmental needs of people living with mental health disabilities and or illness, with strong focus on children and their care givers (mothers of the sick children) who reside in the region.
