The Lake Victoria Special Arts Initiative was formed by a dedicated groups of residents, artists, techers, health workers and villagers who reside in the Kibera slums Nairobi, one of the biggest housing slums in the sub-Saharan Africa. Most of the Volunteers are from the Lake Victoria region, hence the name Lake Victoria Arts.

The project was established in 2006 to address the social, health, cultural and developmental needs of people living with mental health disabilities and or illness, with strong focus on children and their care givers (mothers of the sick children) who reside in the region.
